Title: Jennifer’s Body
Actors/Director/Anything Worth Mentioning Right Away: This movie was written by Diablo Cody, who wrote Juno, and has a cast that you should be fairly familiar with.
Introduction: I purchased this movie on eBay for an undisclosed sum.
Location: There are kids houses, a seedy bar, school, the middle of nowhere in the woods, you know, they had a budget and this movie was in theaters.
Plot: Jennifer and her best friend Needy go see a band called Low Shoulder. The band tries to sacrifice Jennifer to Satan, hoping it will land them a sweet record deal, but since she lied about being a virgin, the sacrifice goes awry and Jennifer is left with super powers when she eats people. So she begins to eat boys one after another until the final victim she wants is Chip, who is the boyfriend of Needy. Needy won’t stand for this and no one believes what she’s saying about Jennifer, so they end up fighting and in the final scenes Jennifer is dead on her bed with Needy next to her and Jen’s mom walks in. It makes Needy just look like some jealous, deranged killer, and so she ends up back where this movie started—in an insane asylum. At the end, however, Needy does manage an escape and goes after the band that started it all, as the credits scroll. It is neither really a generic nor all too out of the ordinary plot, which is what I think it makes it so good. It’s believable and very convincing, to the point where you really do start to feel for Needy (even if just because you want to see Megan Fox die) and to convey that kind of emotion in any medium is a feat within itself.
Acting: I hate to admit it, but it was actually pretty good. I’ll even give Megan Fox props in this movie. But I’m still glad she’s out of Transformers 3.
Production: Again, they had a budget and this was a “major motion picture” or whatever, but a lot of it is dark (in a lighting sense, not in the gothic aspect of things).
Sex/Nudity: There are some sexual scenes, but no nudity.
Special Effects: Most of them come off looking really good, but I read that Megan Fox admitted the black stuff she threw up was chocolate syrup and that just made this movie that much better.
Overall Verdict: Admittedly, there aren’t that many horror movies like this. Having a movie written by, directed by and starring mainly females is something that makes me think of a movie I don’t want to see ever. For this to be the case with a horror movie, I actually think it makes it even better. This movie is really the complete package for what should be a good, cult horror movie. It has a sense of humor (which is sometimes unintentional) and it has really elements of horror and gore. I really think it’s hilarious how the character Chip tells Needy he went to Super Target and bought condoms. Him simply saying Target would’ve been enough for me, but Super Target made it even better. Plus the whole opening scene with Needy saying she’s a kicker and then kicking that lady over some toast ‘ems… that just made this movie start off on such a hilariously refreshing note that I was ready for whatever happened next and was willing to take it with open arms. It’s like seeing a band and knowing that no matter how bad their set might be, at least it opened with an awesome song. But throughout, this movie maintains its twisted, not so scary, satiric, crazy story of two girls that kind of reminds me of a mix of Carrie and Heavenly Creatures.
