When Lab Rats Go Bad

Title:  Gnaw Food of the Gods: Part 2
Actors/Director/Anything Worth Mentioning Right Away:  One of the stars is named “Real Andrews”.  I am not making this up.
Introduction:  This movie was obtained through eBay for an undisclosed amount.  I have no idea if there is a movie that comes before it or not.   Someone should really volunteer to become my research assistant.
Location:  It takes place in a city—labs, outside buildings, even in sewers.   They had some pretty good locations for this one, not just shot in one room or anything.
Plot:  This movie opens with protestors saying you should experiment on animals.  Oddly, the lab rats end up becoming monsters and they start killing people.    Some would call this a horror movie, or really feel the people involved, but they made their own bed, I’ll let them lay in it.
Acting:  I’ve seen worse, but it’s definitely not of the level of “these are actors you’d see in other movies” or something that might make it to theaters.
Production:  It has 1980’s/1990’s quality to it, and considering that it’s from 1989 I’d say it’s right on.  If this movie were being produced after 2000, I’d have a complaint with the quality, but for its copyright date, it’s fine.
Sex/Nudity:  There is a sex scene without nudity, and while they’re rolling around in bed a rat is watching them.   Creeeeeeepy.   Then some guy shows his bare butt while he takes a pee outside and is bitten by a rat (I’ll let you guess where).   And there is a third unfortunate sex scene (with nudity) that takes place because, well, why bother finding out how to stop these killer rats?   Just kidding, the last one was only a dream sequence.  People are dying and here this guy is sleeping on the job!
Special Effects:  For being just before 1990, it has what you would expect for the effects.   Nothing too cheesy, but nothing really outdated either.
Overall Verdict:  If you want to see rats eat people or some guy turn into the Toxic Avenger only to then melt into a pile of goo, then this movie is right up your alley.   However, if you don’t care for movies from the late ‘80’s that are about rats turning on humans, then this probably isn’t for you.   Was I intrigued by the idea of rats killing humans?  Yes.   Was I let down?  Not at all.  You might feel the same way, but maybe not.
