Bowling Ball to the Head (27)

Top 30 Greatest Movies of All-Time # 27
Title:  Uncle Buck
Actors/Director/Anything Worth Mentioning Right Away:  John Candy.  That’s all you need to know.
Introduction:  I don’t remember the first time that I watched this, but I remember the last time… and it’s been too long.
Location:  All over a small town.
Plot:  Forget the plot, it’s not that important.  This movie opened up new doors for me.   Everything done in the 1980’s and early 1990’s was because of this movie, for me.  Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Ghostbusters, The Jerk, Stripes, Groundhog Day, Planes Trains and Automobiles, The Great Outdoors, Canadian Bacon, Trading Places, THE JERK—all of these movies were made possible, to me, by this one single movie.
Acting:  It’s good for what it is- John Candy and kids.
Production:  It didn’t have much to work with, but was in theaters.
Sex/Nudity:  No, though there is some confusion as to such involving a washing machine.
Special Effects:  <not available>
Overall Verdict:  This movie represents an entire generation of movies to me—those first years of Saturday Night Live when actors went on to star in movies that were actually funny.    It was (and still is) the first taste of comedy to me.   To have a truly, flat out funny movie that you never tire of watching is a rare thing.   Sure, there are other movies from this time frame I could say the same about.   But I wouldn’t have watched them or known about them had it not been for Uncle Buck.   Plain and simple.

The List Thus Far:
(27) Uncle Buck
(28) Donnie Darko
(29) Demolition Man
(30) Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
