Top 30 Greatest Movies of All-Time # 19
Title: Big Trouble
Actors/Director/Anything Worth Mentioning Right Away: This is an all-star ensemble cast. It is directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.
Introduction: I probably first saw it on a premium cable channel.
Location: All over one city in Florida, including at an airport.
Plot: This has several subplots going on at the same time, and then at the end they all come together like the Brady Bunch. Basically, what you need to know is that this all revolves around one character who has a hit on him but also showed up at the wrong place and the wrong time for his bomb to get stolen.
Acting: It’s very well done, and I’d expect nothing less from this group of seasoned pros.
Production: It was in theaters, if only briefly because of 9/11.
Sex/Nudity: Some hints at it, but this movie is PG-13.
Special Effects: I always think this movie is an Elmore Leonard book, but it’s really Dave Barry
Overall Verdict: Tim Allen, in one of his only post-Home Improvement funny things. Johnny Knoxville, who proves he can play an idiot. Ben Foster, finally getting some props. Zooey Deschanel in one of her first big roles. DJ Qualls keeping it real. Heavy D, Omar Epps, Jason Lee, Dennis Farina, Jeanine Gaerafalo, Patrick Warburton, Andy Richter. The list just keeps going (if only for a little while) This is a big list of who’s who, but they aren’t all the biggest actors at the time so it works out better than when you feel like a movie is filled with too many stars and they’ll never make their money back. Plus this is just funny with a somewhat suspenseful plot to boot. Along the lines of Get Shorty, this is where I think the term “smart comedy” came from.
