It’s, Like, History, Dude (26)

Top 30 Greatest Movies of All-Time # 26
Title:  Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure
Actors/Director/Anything Worth Mentioning Right Away:  Keanu Reeves and George Carlin are the stand outs here.
Introduction:  Another movie I don’t remember seeing for the first time or why, but still, I’ve maintained its excellence over the years.
Location:  Throughout the entirety of history, dude!!  <guitar sounds>
Plot:  Bill and Ted are about to fail at school, thus forcing their most awesome rock band to break up.  (Bogus!)  Time traveler Rufus goes back in time to give the duo a phone booth time machine.  (Righteous!)  They then use this to go pluck historical figures from, well, history to bring back to their present for the big history presentation.   I feel something needs to be said about the importance of this movie as it relates to history.   Not movie history, but the kind of history that they teach you in school.  When I was growing up, history was the only subject I really had trouble caring about.  I liked the other subjects because of things that I was exposed to which related to them.  For math, I had Square One (Mathnet was my crack back then)  For other number matters and letters, I (much like every other kid out there) had Sesame Street.   And if that isn’t enough, for science I had The Magic School Bus and Bill Nye.   But what did I have to make history seem like fun?   Bill & Ted came a few years too late.   By the time I saw this movie, I had already moved passed the past.   I already had the mentality of: “It’s done, it’s over, it cannot be changed, so how does it affect me today?”   Sadly, many kids who aren’t exposed to this movie will feel the same way.   Can we get a Bill & Ted in 3D anyone??
Acting:  They act like stoned surfers (a way Keanu has been typecast as now), but they act it very well.  Whether or not they were living the part…  And the historical figures do well in their roles as well.
Production:  This was in theaters (Though I didn’t see it as such) and it had really good settings throughout, so yeah, it passes the test.
Sex/Nudity:  Nope, none.
Special Effects:  Napoleon goes down a waterslide and loves it!!  This is great.
Overall Verdict:  This is one of the funniest movies- even to this day- and obviously paved the way for other duo movies such as Dude, Where’s My Car? and Harold and Kumar.    The sequel was also good to me, and I’ve since been waiting for them to somehow bring this back for a third installment.

The List Thus Far:
(26) Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure
(27) Uncle Buck
(28) Donnie Darko
(29) Demolition Man
(30) Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
